Drivers

Buying a new car. It’s always been a bit of a daunting task, especially with EVs and Hybrids throwing their hat into the ring to join the traditional petrol and diesel contenders. This rings true for all vehicle styles, but especially the SUV market.

The number of registered SUVs in the UK grew by a third between 2022 and 2023, and when it comes to selecting an SUV, drivers are certainly spoilt for choice. With so many options on the market, however, how do you narrow it down and make the right choice?

At P+B, we understand the importance of making an informed decision when selecting your next vehicle. It wasn’t an easy task, but we’ve put together our top picks for mid-range SUVs available in the UK.

Volkswagen Tiguan

Looking for something that balances style and practicality? The Volkswagen Tiguan ticks both boxes. This third-generation SUV combines German engineering with a contemporary and practical design. The Tiguan offers a perfect blend of power and comfort, making it an excellent choice for those who demand more from their vehicle.

The Tiguan is built to accommodate both the daily grind on city streets and weekend adventures on country roads. The driver can choose from a selection of engines, ranging from the modern 1.5L petrol with mild-hybrid assistance to the hardy 2.0L diesel.

The Tiguan hosts a spacious interior, with supportive front seats that can be upgraded to include features such as heating, cooling and even massaging! The driver can also choose from a selection of trim levels. The Tiguan boasts an impressive boot space of 520 litres, expanding to 615 litres with the back seats pushed forward. Speaking of boot space, why not check out our blog on how boot space is actually measured?

The eye-catching price tag is what most drivers will focus on, with its most cost-effective edition, the 1.5L mild-hybrid, priced well above the other similarly-powered options on this list. You’ll be paying even more if you fancy the R-Line specification or the plug-in hybrid engine.

Those who choose the cheaper option of the mild-hybrid 1.5 petrol are likely to average around 40 mpg, whereas the diesel model will average around 50 mpg. Do keep in mind that the diesel drivers will pay a higher VED road tax than the hybrid ones.

Kia Sportage

The Kia Sportage continues to grow in popularity due to its mix of comfortability and affordability. As one of Kia’s best-selling models, the Sportage is a competitive option for those seeking a reliable and stylish vehicle in the midsize SUV segment.

Kia is fully embracing the emergence of hybrid tech, with the Sportage available in both regular hybrid and plug-in hybrid. The mild hybrid versions certainly pack enough punch, achieving 0-60 in just under 10s, but it might be worth picking one of the alternatives if you require a bit more oomph.

The first standout will be the spacious and space-age interior, filled with modern equipment and a polished trim. From advanced safety features, such as forward-collision avoidance and blind-spot detection, to a tech-packed infotainment system, this SUV ensures you’re always connected and safe on the road. The Sportage has a maximum 587 litre boot space with generous spacing at the front and the back. A sensible choice for long motorway drives with the family.

While the Sportage stacks numerous innovations, the biggest head-turner here is the price. The cheapest model beats or is on par with many others on this list (and many others we didn’t feature!). Supported by a reasonable average of 40-45 mpg, this one is certainly worth considering.

Seat Ateca

Seat have brought their expected Spanish flair to the SUV table in the form of the 2024 Ateca. This refined and versatile SUV stands out in its segment with a bold exterior and agile handling.

The Ateca has made a few tweaks here and there to compete with similar cars in its bracket. The diesel option has been replaced in favour of hybrid technology, and the body has been tweaked to match the new and smooth modern look of newer-age SUVs.

Your first option is the classic 1.0L petrol carrying 144hp, which is ideal for pottering about town. The options that will interest most, however, will be the 1.5L petrol with mild hybrid tech or the 2.0L diesel with its 59 mpg.

Inside, the Seat Ateca provides ample space for passengers and luggage, with a flexible layout that suits both families and professionals. The technology-packed cockpit, featuring a sleek infotainment system and smartphone connectivity, ensures that every drive is both enjoyable and connected.

Do its competitors do some things better? Yes. Is it fun to drive? Also yes. A smart, stylish, and spirited SUV, the Seat Ateca is a clear contender.

Hyundai Tucson

If you drive on UK roads, chances are you’ll recognise this one. The unrivalled best seller in Hyundai’s lineup, the Tucson has sold over 7 million units globally since its first rollout in 2004.

Tucson buyers are spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing an engine, including full hybrid, plug-in hybrid and mild-hybrid. An excellent choice for those who want to balance power with eco-consciousness. Its smooth handling and refined driving experience make it perfect for both urban commutes and longer road trips.

On the inside, you’ll find a comfortable, well-appointed cabin with a spacious 620 litre boot. Hyundai’s attention to detail is clear in the quality of the materials and the seamless integration of cutting-edge technology, from infotainment systems to safety features like adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assistance.

The standard turbo petrol engine carries an average of 41.5 mpg, while the hybrid versions can reach up to 49 mpg. The impressive 265hp plug-in hybrid boasts an official 201mpg. The Tucson may be a little more costly than the Sportage or the Ateca, but P+B believe you get your value for money.

Škoda Karoq

Last but not least, the new and improved Škoda Karoq. Despite rumours of its discontinuation, the Karoq is back on the block with a small facelift and a tech overhaul. Being practical is the priority here, and they don’t shy away from it.

The Karoq already hosts a healthy choice of engines, from the entry-level 1.0L petrol to the powerful 2.0L diesel. The Karoq is yet to add any hybrid options to its fleet, so it’s a bit further behind than the others.

From an interior design standpoint, the Karoq isn’t anything to write home about. From a practicality standpoint, it’s great. The interior prioritises comfort and convenience, with innovative technology and a comfortable, flexible driving position. From its intuitive infotainment system to its advanced driver assistance tools, such as adaptive cruise control and autonomous emergency braking system, the Karoq ensures a smooth and safe driving experience, whether you’re on the motorway or navigating busy city streets.

As with most Skoda vehicles, you’re getting exactly what it says on the tin. A sturdy and reliable SUV that will do the job. It may not be the flashiest, but it’s certainly worth considering.

These are just a handful from a growing pool of reliable SUVs on the market. Other choices we didn’t touch on, such as the Volvo XC40 and the Cupra Formentor, are also sensible options.

Whether it’s for navigating city streets, embarking on weekend adventures, or simply enjoying the elevated driving position and space, SUVs have always offered versatility without compromise.
